Eight students from DeSales and
Ms. Pohlmann and Ms. Barnett participated in Brightside’s Environmental Youth Summit at the Louisville Science Center on
February 20, 2008.
We attended the event along with several other public and private schools from across the county. Mayor Abramson and Senator Yarmuth spoke as the students where involved in discussions on energy and water conservation in our schools.
DeSales received recognition and a grant for our work to better our physical community. It is our goal at DeSales to work to become a Kentucky Green and Healthy School

Here are some tips to get you started from the DeSales Environmental Club:
PAPER
We all use paper, there’s no way around it. The sad truth is that so many of us waste perfectly usable paper and never give it a second thought. Paper has two sides, and it has two sides for a reason. This might come as a shock to some of you, but the other side of the paper is perfectly usable. In fact, they want you to use the other side. I know, I was taken aback too. It’s really simple; the less paper you use, the less trees have to be cut down and the easier it is for everyone to breathe. Since you’re using both sides of the paper now, you can cut back on how much paper you print from your computer. If you’re working on something to print, only print your final copy. Just think about it, why would you waste a sheet of paper for all your goof-ups?
WATER
Water is a non-renewable resource believe it or not. There are so many ways to help conserve water, you can at least give two or three of ’em a shot. You could cut your showers down to about five minutes instead of ten or fifteen (you’ll still smell good, I promise). Another thing, don’t be so inconsiderate; when you’re brushing your teeth or shaving, don’t just let the water run the whole time. Also, when you want to thaw something out to cook, you can do so by refrigerating it overnight instead of just blasting it with scalding hot water.
ENERGY
Just walk through your house and count all the things you carelessly leave plugged in to draw energy while you don’t need it. Go on, I dare ya! All of these things draw energy, even if they’re on stand by. You can stop this problem by unplugging things when you don’t need them, or you can get power strips to plug your TV, DVD/VCR,
X BOX into. When you leave the house, you can flip the switch off and you’re not drawing energy! One more thing; by replacing just one incandescent bulb with a compact fluorescent bulb you will prevent the emission of 8 – 16 pounds of sulfur dioxide and 1,000 – 20,000 pounds of carbon dioxide (don’t be cheap, get a couple of ’em, they won’t set you back much at all). These bulbs can also reduce your electric bills by up to 35% or more.
PLEASE practice these tips in your home and share them with you friends and family. Mother Earth and all of us here in the DeSales High School Environmental Club will greatly appreciate it. For more tips, go to
