The Spanish Department supports the
Vision Statement of DeSales High School by preparing students to be
good global citizens.
The National Standards for World
Language Learning center around five goals: communication, cultures,
connections, comparisons and communities. To that end, we believe that
language and communication are at the heart of the human experience.
We must equip students to communicate successfully in a pluralistic
American society and abroad. World languages open new worlds,
introducing students to new cultures and ways of viewing topics as
vast as global politics and cultural traditions and as finite as
everyday interactions with non-English speaking peoples. Through
the process of world language education, students come to see their
own world in the light of other worlds.
The goals of the Spanish Department
are to assist the students in being able to:
-
Speak, listen, read and write in
Spanish; progressing through the novice, intermediate and advanced
levels over the course of their studies.
-
Demonstrate their understanding of the
practices and perspectives of the Hispanic culture.
-
Compare and contrast their native
language and culture with that of the Spanish language and Hispanic
culture.
-
Become lifelong learners by using the
target language for personal enjoyment and enrichment both within and
beyond the school setting.
